(Zillennials — part of Gen Z — exhibit independence and decisiveness, and are more likely to focus on solving problems and creating ideas, says Joseph Pidoriano, 23 and a businessman himself. The New Dorp resident is one of four young entrepreneurs who we'll be highlighting who head up local businesses and are demonstrating insight and perspective into their professions during a challenging time.)

Today: Meet Shannon Miller of Shanny Cakes

Shanny Cakes, a West Brighton home-based baking business, offers customized designer specialty cakes, cake pops, number cakes and more. The detail and handcrafted accents are artistically created upon request and are the elements that make Shanny Cakes unique.

"The possibilities are fun and endless and I love a new idea or challenge," says owner Shannon Miller, 23. "And it's been my pleasure to serve special occasions with a sweet explosion of colors, textures, flavors and sparkle. I love a party and Shanny Cakes is a place where sugar and smiles come together creating a truly special experience."

Shannon has had an affinity for baking since she was a child. So when a friend's 21st birthday was approaching, as an alternative to the number balloons, she tried something different. She created a floral "21" cream tart number cake. And through the power of social media, the number cake launched her business in May 2019.

"What I have enjoyed most during this past year are the orders for so many health heroes, essential workers and first responders. From March through May I doubled all orders and also fulfilled monetary donations to deliver sweet treats to many essential workers. All were themed in line with the rainbow project to spread sunshine," she said.

Prior to COVID, weekend orders were steady but that quickly changed throughout the shelter in place order in New York.

"I jumped at the opportunity to expand my business by offering individually boxed and wrapped treats for birthday drive-bys and socially distant birthday celebrations. In the midst of it, I filled an order for hospital workers and decided I wanted to give back so I doubled the order," she added.

Shannon started a campaign where she doubled all orders for essential workers and filled monetary donations as well as delivered to well-deserving essential workers.

"After just days of posting the campaign on social media, I was so humbled by friends, customers and community coming together to work as a team to spread sweet smiles to essential workers on the front lines. My orders tripled compared to pre-COVID. The 'rainbow campaign' for essential workers included health heroes, community grocery store workers and first responders, and served as the catalyst for the Shanny Cakes brand. The 'Shanny Cake' or 'Shanny Cakes Treats' have now become recognized as a staple in the community! I cannot thank the community enough we are #NYSTRONG together!"

Shannon is also humbled by new customers who've entrusted her to provide the sweet part of their special celebration which has given her the opportunity to do what she loves and help to grow her small business.
