Small businesses are those with fewer than 50 workers and less than $1 million in gross revenue. The funds are being made available through the U.S. Department of Agriculture, and application may be made by rural public institutions including towns, communities, state agencies, nonprofit corporations and institutions of higher education. Federally-recognized tribes may also apply, as well as rural cooperatives if they're organized as a private nonprofit corporation. Rural business development grant money must be used for projects that benefit rural areas or towns outside the urbanized periphery of any city with a population of 50,000 or more.
